Sind / سند explores the potential of combining bamboo and locally sourced clay to develop sustainable material applications for contemporary design.
Inspired by Islamic patterns deeply rooted in Palestinian culture and visible throughout the local streets and built environment, the project explores how cultural references can be reinterpreted through contemporary material experimentation.
Emerging from university-based material experimentation, the project investigates how two natural materials with distinct qualities can complement one another to create functional, durable, and environmentally responsible products. Through testing, prototyping, and refinement, the designers explored how bamboo and clay can move beyond their conventional uses and become part of contemporary everyday objects.
The project builds a connection between bamboo as a sustainable material and clay as a deeply rooted Palestinian craft material. By combining material innovation, local resources, cultural inspiration, and craftsmanship, SEND / سند demonstrates how traditional materials and patterns can be reinterpreted through experimentation, creating new possibilities for sustainable contemporary design..
