KHITAN
Designer: Salah Jaber
Artisan: Sumaya Hawamda
KHITAN is a contemporary design project that revitalizes Palestinian wool craftsmanship by transforming locally sourced natural wool into handcrafted artistic rugs using the tufting technique.
Inspired by traditional Palestinian floor tile patterns, the project reinterprets cultural heritage through contemporary textile design, creating functional pieces for modern interiors. Drawing from the designer’s experience in traditional weaving and rug-making, KHITAN combines heritage knowledge with innovative production methods to develop products that respond to contemporary markets.
The project also supports local artisans and wool-producing communities by creating new opportunities for Palestinian wool craftsmanship. Despite challenges related to the availability of natural wool and the changing conditions surrounding traditional production, KHITAN demonstrates how design can contribute to safeguarding endangered craft practices and ensuring that Palestinian cultural memory continues to live through contemporary objects.
